The National Australian Built Environment Rating Scheme (NABERS) is a performance based rating scheme administered by the Department of Environment and Climate Change that measures an existing Commercial Building’s overall environmental performance during operation. The program in now funded by the Australian Government.
NABERS is a comparative rating scheme that benchmarks the operational performance a property against its peers in an equitable manner.

The NABERS Energy rating for offices, was launched as ABGR (Australian Building Greenhouse Rating) in 1998.
The rating includes all fuels used in the central service of the building, other components include, the Nett Lettable Area of the property, the agreed hours of service of the building and its geographical location.
NABERS Energy benchmarks a buildings greenhouse impact on a scale of one to five.
Water
Australia faces major challenges in ensuring sustainable water supply in the face of drying climate and rising demand for water. Today, commercial buildings accounts for 10% of our urban water consumption.
NABERS Water measures the water consumption of an office building and compares it to the market. A water rating is only available as a Base Building or Whole Building rating. A one to five star rating is given, five stars being the best performance. Two and a half stars is the current market average.

Waste management is crucial to the daily operation of buildings. A key to reducing your impact on the environment is to decrease the waste generated by your organisation or building.
The NABERS Waste rating for offices measures the waste generated and the recycling performance of a building and compares it to other similar buildings. A 1-5 star rating is given, five being best practice.

NABERS Energy and Water ratings for Hotels was launched in May 2008. It is the industry standard measuring and benchmarking the environmental performance for existing Hotels in Australia.
Undertaking a NABERS Hotel Accredited rating, is the first step to managing your hotel’s impact on the environment. The old management saying of, “you cannot manage what you cannot measure“ runs true for environmental aspects of your Hotel as well.
A NABERS Hotel Accredited Energy & Water Rating is calculated using the size of the hotel, it’s energy and water consumption, facilities available on the property and a number of other factors to allocate a start rating between 0-5 which allows you to compare your performance with other hotels and similar buildings.
NABERS Retail ratings for Shopping Centres was developed with the assistance of the retail property industry. It is managed nationally by the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW) on behalf of Federal, state and territory governments. This rating tool was released in late 2009 and is expected to become the Industry standard for assessing the environmental performance of shopping centres.
NABERS is the only rating tool that provides a benchmark for shopping centres environmental performance compared to other Australian shopping centres.
NABERS Energy and Water for shopping centres can be used to rate the base building services of retail shopping centres over 15,000m² gross lettable area retail (GLAR) within Australia.
The estimated rating(s) may not be accurate if your shopping centre is less than 15,000m² GLAR.

NABERS retail can be used to measure a shopping centre’s energy and water efficiency on a scale of 1-5 stars, with 2.5 stars being the market average.
